Why On The Ball?

On The Ball at Mobilates is a fun, engaging class led by Kerry, offered as a special session once a month on Tuesdays. Using large gym stability balls, this 40-minute class brings something a little different to the timetable — combining movement, balance, and a sense of playfulness.

The class focuses on improving balance, stability, and core strength through a variety of exercises performed on and around the ball. The unstable surface challenges the body in a gentle but effective way, encouraging coordination, control, and functional movement.

As well as the physical benefits, On The Ball is a class that many members enjoy for its light-hearted feel. The addition of the ball brings an element of fun, with opportunities to bounce, move, and explore new ways of exercising that may not be part of a typical session.

Like all Mobilates classes, it is adaptable to different abilities, with options to work at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and use support where appropriate. It’s a great choice for anyone looking to build confidence, improve stability, and try something a little different in a supportive environment.

A Bit of On The Ball History

On The Ball was introduced by Kerry as a way to bring something different to the Mobilates timetable and add variety to the weekly classes. Many members already had stability balls at home but weren’t always sure how to use them safely or effectively, so this class was designed to build confidence and help people get the most out of their equipment.

The session runs once a month as part of a Tuesday evening rotation, alongside Togetherness and Boost Your Bones. This rotating format keeps the timetable fresh and gives members the opportunity to try different styles of movement and equipment.

On The Ball also allows Kerry to bring creativity into the timetable, designing sessions that challenge balance, coordination, and stability in new ways. The class has become a popular addition, with many members enjoying the chance to move differently — and, of course, the opportunity to add a bit of bounce.

While the class is fun and light-hearted, it can also be surprisingly challenging, offering a full-body workout with plenty of options to suit different abilities. It’s always well attended and continues to be a favourite for those looking to try something a little different.

Adapting On The Ball for Mobilates Members

At Mobilates, On The Ball is designed to be fun, safe, and adaptable for all abilities. While the stability ball can add an extra challenge, there are always options to make movements more accessible and supportive.

Participants can:

  • Place the ball against a wall or another stable surface for extra support

  • Use a chair, sofa, bed, or wall for balance when needed

  • Perform some movements with a smaller ball instead of the large stability ball

  • Adjust positioning, such as taking the legs wider or keeping hands on the ball rather than lifting them away

  • Work at their own pace, building confidence gradually

Some exercises can be done standing, holding or lifting the ball, while others may involve using the ball for support or incorporating it into movements with the upper or lower body.

These adaptations allow everyone to take part in a way that feels comfortable, helping to build balance, coordination, and confidence over time.

How to Prepare for an On The Ball Class

To get the most out of your On The Ball session, a little preparation can help you move safely and confidently:

  • Make sure you have plenty of space to move the ball around freely

  • Use a Pilates mat or non-slip surface to help keep the ball stable

  • Wear bare feet or grippy socks to reduce the risk of slipping

  • Keep pets out of the space for this class — the moving ball can be unpredictable

  • Choose the correct size ball for your height as circumferences so when you sit on it your hips are slightly higher than your knees and your knees are at a right angle.

  • Check the ball is sufficiently inflated as it may need pumping up over time.

  • When inflating the ball use a foot pump or bicycle pump rather than an electric pump as they can over inflate and risk the ball popping.

  • Take care during transitions between sitting, standing, and lying positions, and listen carefully to Kerry’s guidance on moving safely.

Having the right setup will help you feel more confident, allowing you to focus on balance, stability, and enjoying the movement.

The Benefits of On The Ball

On The Ball supports both physical and mental wellbeing in a fun and engaging way.

Participants can expect to:

  • Improve balance and stability through working on an unstable surface

  • Strengthen core muscles, supporting posture and everyday movement

  • Enhance coordination and body awareness

  • Build confidence when moving in different positions

  • Improve overall strength and functional movement

  • Enjoy a full-body workout that is both challenging and adaptable

The use of the stability ball encourages the body to make small, controlled adjustments, helping to develop balance, control, and coordination over time.

As well as the physical benefits, the class brings a real sense of enjoyment. The opportunity to move differently and even bounce a little adds a light-hearted element that many members love.
