Foundation & Flow at Mobilates

Updated: Aug 27

Why Foundation & Flow?

Foundations & Flow is a progressive six-week Fitness Pilates programme designed to help participants build confidence, improve movement and develop a deeper understanding of Pilates in a calm, supportive and inclusive environment.

Led by Suzanne, the programme is suitable for complete beginners, people returning to Pilates after a break, and existing Mobilates members who would like to revisit the foundations, refine their technique or simply understand a little more about how and why we move.

Each session combines standing and floor-based movement, bringing together Alignment, Breath and Centring (ABC), functional and modified Fitness Pilates exercises, flowing sequences, strength, mobility, balance and relaxation.

But Foundation & Flow isn't simply about learning Pilates exercises or trying to achieve the "perfect" movement. Across the six weeks, familiar movements return and gradually develop, giving participants time to practise, ask questions, recognise their progress and become more confident in understanding their own bodies.

The aim is to create a space where learning and movement go hand in hand — helping participants leave each session feeling stronger, more confident and more connected to the way they move.

Why Was Foundation & Flow Created?

Foundations & Flow grew from Suzanne's experience of completing her Fitness Pilates training and wanting to bring some of that learning into Mobilates in a way that felt accessible, supportive and relevant to our members.

Rather than simply introducing another Pilates class, Suzanne wanted to create something that gave people time to learn as well as move.

Pilates can involve lots of unfamiliar terminology, positions and movement patterns, and it can be easy to concentrate so much on following the instructor that we don't always understand what we're doing, why we're doing it or what we're supposed to be feeling.

Foundation & Flow creates space for that understanding to develop.

It also reflects Suzanne's love of flowing movement, combining standing and floor-based exercises and encouraging participants to explore how different movements connect.

Most importantly, Foundation & Flow isn't about being the most flexible, performing the most advanced version of an exercise or getting every movement "right". It's about developing greater awareness of your own body, understanding how movement works for you and building the confidence to make choices about your own Pilates practice.

What is Fitness Pilates?

Fitness Pilates is a movement-based approach that brings together the principles of Pilates with functional exercise, helping to develop strength, mobility, balance, coordination and body awareness.

Within Foundations & Flow, an important starting point is Alignment, Breath and Centring (ABC). Participants explore how they position their body, use diaphragmatic breathing and develop awareness of their centre before applying these principles to different movements and positions.

The programme includes both standing and floor-based Fitness Pilates exercises, with movements explored in a variety of positions including seated, lying on the back or side, all fours and, where appropriate, lying on the front.

The emphasis isn't on achieving the biggest movement or the most advanced version of an exercise. Instead, participants are encouraged to move with awareness, control and understanding

The Foundation & Flow Learning Journey

Foundation & Flow has been designed as a six-week learning journey, with each session building gradually on the one before.

Rather than introducing a completely new set of exercises every week, familiar movements and concepts return throughout the programme. This repetition is intentional. As movements become more familiar, participants have more opportunity to focus on how they feel, develop their technique and notice their own progress.

New exercises, variations and progressions are introduced gradually, allowing participants to extend what they already know without feeling overwhelmed.

Some movement families will become familiar friends along the way — including squats and balance work, leg slides, shoulder bridge, side-lying leg work, seated spinal mobility and all-fours exercises. Each can develop in different ways as confidence and understanding grow.

By the end of the programme, the aim isn't simply to have completed six classes. It's to have a better understanding of your own movement, greater confidence in your Pilates practice and a strong foundation from which to continue.

The Standing Flow

Every Foundations & Flow session begins with a unique Standing Flow, designed around the movement focus for that week's class.

But the Standing Flow is much more than a traditional warm-up. It provides a bridge between everyday movement and the Fitness Pilates exercises that follow, giving participants time to connect with their Alignment, Breath and Centring before progressing onto the mat.

Through flowing standing movements, participants work on posture and body awareness while gently developing mobility, balance and coordination. Functional movement patterns are introduced and practised here too, helping the body become familiar with some of the ideas that will return later in the session.

As the six weeks progress, each Standing Flow will be different, while familiar principles and movement patterns continue to return.

The aim isn't simply to prepare the body to exercise harder - it's to prepare the body to move better.

Adapting Foundation & Flow for Mobilates Members

At Mobilates, we know that no two bodies move in exactly the same way. Health conditions, pain, fatigue, mobility, previous injuries and confidence can all affect how a movement feels, and this may change from one week - or even one day - to the next.

Throughout Foundation & Flow, different options and adaptations are offered so participants can find a version of a movement that works for their own body. Support can be added where needed, such as using a sturdy chair or wall during standing and balance work, and alternatives can be explored for floor-based positions or exercises that don't feel comfortable or accessible.

The aim isn't for everyone to perform exactly the same version of an exercise. It's to understand the purpose of the movement and explore how it can work for you.

If you find an exercise difficult, uncomfortable or simply impossible, we can explore what made it challenging and find another way of working towards the same movement goal. That might mean changing the range of movement, adding support, choosing a different position or trying an alternative exercise altogether.

Foundations & Flow is about learning how to make Pilates work for your body, rather than trying to make your body fit a particular exercise.

“Foundation & Flow isn't about teaching you to follow an instructor better. It's about giving you the knowledge and confidence to understand your movement and make it your own.”

A Supportive Learning Environment

Foundation & Flow provides time for learning both before and after the movement session, while allowing the class itself to remain calm and flowing.

Before We Begin

At the start of each session, Suzanne will show you her own set-up and talk you through exactly what you'll need for that week's class.

This gives everyone time to organise their space, position their mat and equipment and make sure any additional support is available before the movement begins.

There will also be time to ask initial questions and settle into Alignment, Breath and Centring, so you can begin feeling prepared rather than rushed.

During the Class

Once we start moving, the aim is to keep things calm, flowing and continuous. Exercises are introduced progressively with clear cueing, and different options and adaptations are offered along the way.

Questions are always welcome if you need clarification, but we don't need to stop and solve every individual challenge there and then - because there is dedicated time for that afterwards.

After the Class

At the end of the movement session, there is time to stay, ask questions and reflect on how things felt.

This is your opportunity to bring up an exercise you found difficult, ask about technique, explore an adaptation or progression, or discuss something you'd like to practise between sessions.

It also means we can learn from each other. A question or adaptation that helps one person may give somebody else an idea they hadn't considered.

This before, during and after structure is deliberately built into the programme so that learning can happen without losing the flow and enjoyment of the movement session itself.

The Benefits of Foundation & Flow

Foundation & Flow is designed to help participants develop not only their Pilates practice, but also their confidence and understanding of their own movement.

Across the six-week programme, participants can work towards:

  • Improving strength and muscular endurance

  • Developing mobility and flexibility

  • Improving balance and coordination

  • Building core stability and body awareness

  • Developing posture and alignment

  • Becoming more confident moving between standing, seated and floor-based positions

  • Understanding how and why different movements are performed

  • Learning how to adapt exercises to suit their own body

  • Building confidence through repetition and gradual progression

  • Developing smoother, more controlled movement

  • Becoming more independent and confident in their Pilates practice

  • Enjoying movement in a calm, supportive environment

Breathe & Restore

Just as every Foundations & Flow session begins with Standing Flow, each one finishes with Breathe & Restore - time dedicated to slowing down, reconnecting and allowing the body to settle.

Depending on the session, this may include breathing exercises, relaxation or meditation. It gives participants an opportunity to pause after the movement practice, notice how their body feels and leave the session feeling calmer and more balanced.

Breathe & Restore also reflects an important part of the Foundation & Flow philosophy: movement isn't only about activity, strength or progression. Rest and recovery matter too.

Afterwards, there is still time to stay for questions, discussion and reflection before we finish.

How to Prepare for Foundation & Flow

If you're completely new to Pilates, don't worry about knowing how to set yourself up before you arrive. At the beginning of each session, Suzanne will show you her own set-up, explain exactly what you'll need for that week's class and give you time to get everything ready.

What You'll Need

For every Foundations & Flow session, it's useful to have:

  • A Pilates or exercise mat - something comfortable enough for floor-based exercises but not so soft that you feel unstable.

  • A sturdy chair - ideally without wheels, which can be used for support during standing and balance work and for adaptations where needed.

  • A small cushion or folded towel - useful for adding support or comfort in different positions.

  • Something comfortable to support your head - a small cushion is ideal, although a Squishmallow is also a firm favourite with many Mobilates members!

  • A clear space around your mat - enough room to move your arms and legs comfortably.

  • A wall or other stable surface nearby - useful if you'd like additional support during standing or balance exercises.

  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

  • Bare feet or suitable grippy socks, depending on what feels safest for you.

  • Water - keep a drink nearby and take breaks whenever you need them.

Equipment We May Use

As the programme progresses, we may also introduce some of the equipment regularly used in Mobilates classes, including:

  • Long stretchy resistance bands

  • Small exercise or Pilates balls

  • Light hand weights

You don't need to rush out and buy lots of specialist equipment before your first session. Where possible, household objects can also be used as alternatives — for example, filled water bottles or tins can work as light weights.

You'll be told what is needed for each session, and we'll talk through suitable alternatives where possible.

Setting Up for an Online Class

Try to position your device somewhere stable where you can see and hear Suzanne clearly. If possible, angle your camera so that you can be seen both standing and when working on the mat.

Most importantly, you don't need the perfect Pilates set-up. We'll get organised together before we start.

Foundation & Flow is a learning programme, and learning how to create a set-up that works for your own body and home is part of that too.

What to Expect Across the Six Weeks

No two Foundation & Flow sessions will be exactly the same, but each week will feel familiar enough for you to build on what you've already learned.

Throughout the programme, we'll explore strength, mobility, balance, coordination and core stability while continuing to return to Alignment, Breath and Centring. You'll experience different positions and begin to recognise how individual exercises and movement patterns can link together to create smooth, flowing sequences.

Some exercises will return regularly. Others will be introduced as the programme develops. You might revisit a familiar movement with a different arm position, add a piece of equipment, explore a progression or discover another way of performing it.

Each session follows the same overall journey:

  • Prepare and Connect - time to set up, ask initial questions and reconnect with Alignment, Breath and Centring.

  • Standing Flow - a unique flowing sequence introducing the movement focus for that week's session.

  • Fitness Pilates Practice - a mixture of standing and floor-based exercises developing strength, mobility, stability, balance and movement confidence.

  • Breathe & Restore - breathing, relaxation or meditation to allow the body and mind to slow down.

  • Questions and Reflection - dedicated time afterwards to discuss exercises, explore adaptations, ask questions and reflect on what you've learned.

  • The aim isn't to see how many exercises we can fit into six weeks. It's to give you time to learn, practise, explore and progress.

Final Thought

My hope for Foundations & Flow is that the confidence and skills participants develop will go far beyond these six weeks.

I want people to feel able to join whatever Mobilates class they want to try, with a better understanding of their own body and the confidence to make movement work for them. That means knowing how to use equipment safely and effectively, understanding the language and cues instructors use, recognising different Pilates positions and movements, and knowing that it's okay to choose an adaptation when something doesn't work for you.

It's also about developing the foundations that support good movement — improving positioning, movement quality and body awareness, and understanding why we perform an exercise rather than simply copying what an instructor is doing.

Many of the movements we explore in Pilates have a purpose that reaches far beyond the mat. Squatting, reaching, balancing, rotating, getting up and down and maintaining strength and stability are all part of everyday life. I want participants to understand those connections and learn how to make the key movements their own, so they can use them to support the things that matter to them.

By the end of Foundations & Flow, you don't need to know everything about Pilates.

My hope is that you'll know more about your own movement, feel more confident making choices for your body and have a set of foundations you can take with you into other classes and everyday life.

If the programme leaves you feeling more confident to try something new, more able to adapt movement when you need to, and more aware of how Pilates can support you in everyday life, then Foundations & Flow has done exactly what I hoped it would do.
