Online physiotherapy for chronic pain

Introducing Alex, Physiotherapist and Body Doubling Support

We know that so many people with chronic illness, persistent pain, fatigue and complex health conditions find it hard to access physiotherapy, especially physiotherapy that really understands bodies like ours.

It can be difficult to find someone who understands persistent pain, fluctuating symptoms, fear around movement, fatigue, neurodivergence, and the reality of trying to keep up with exercises when life and health are already such a lot to handle.

Alex does just that. He is a physiotherapist with specialist experience working with people with chronic pain and complex health conditions, and we are so pleased that he will be joining Team Mobilates in June to offer online physiotherapy appointments and something very exciting, physio body doubling.

These body doubling sessions are for people who already have exercises to do, but find it hard to actually do them. Maybe you struggle to get started, lose motivation, feel unsure whether you are doing them right, get stuck when something does not feel right, have questions about how to adapt them, or find they hurt and then give up. I am absolutely one of those people too.

Body doubling is already so effective for many Mobilates members, especially those of us who find it easier to do things alongside others, including neurodivergent members. Having a qualified physiotherapist there to guide, support, adapt and reassure you feels like such a useful extension of this.

We are really pleased and excited to be introducing Alex to the Mobilates community. You can read more from Alex below.

About Alex

Alex is the owner of ABPT physiotherapy, and also works as a university lecturer in Birmingham. His experience has involved working in the UK and New Zealand, including work as a specialist MSK physiotherapist and Clinical Lead for a multi-disciplinary pain management service. Alex also runs Physi-Ed, with a YouTube channel and podcast for healthcare professionals and patients.

Alex’s approach is person centred, putting the individual at the heart of treatment. The purpose of physiotherapy is to help people get back to and remain involved in the things that give their life meaning, whether that involves finding ways to help you manage your pain, increasing your activity in a sustainable way, or just helping you to understand your diagnosis and symptoms and what that means for you.

Everybody is unique and your individual journey matters, and so no two people will need the same support. During the session you will have the opportunity to share your experience and discuss exactly what you want from physiotherapy. There is no judgement or challenging of your experience, only the opportunity for you to share what matters and explore options to help you move forwards.

For more information on Alex’s experience and approach to treatment, you can find him at the links below. Alex has done podcast episodes with both Leanne (Founder of Mobilates) and Ellie (Volunteer and Mobilates member), and you can watch them at the links below:

Body Doubling Sessions

These are online group sessions to support individuals who already have an exercise programme and may want physiotherapy supervision, refinement or guidance. They are 45 minute sessions whereby participants complete their physiotherapy exercise programme and can access the support of qualified physiotherapist to help them to progress or adapt exercises as needed.

PLEASE NOTE: in order to safely progress your exercises you may be required to share information about your symptoms and your health condition in front of the group, or be recommended to attend a 1-2-1 session. Whilst these sessions can support you with existing exercise programmes, for more individualised advice, diagnosis and rehabilitation you may be referred to a 1-2-1 session to ensure that your symptoms can be safely evaluated and that you are advised appropriately.

Online Physiotherapy Consultations

For individuals who want an individualised assessment, guidance, advice and rehabilitation, one-to-one sessions allow a thorough and comprehensive assessment and treatment plan. These are online consultations of around 30-40 minutes at a reduced rate for Mobilates members, during which you will share your story with Alex, and explore what you hope to achieve from physiotherapy, before creating a collaborative and personalised plan of how best to progress towards this.
