Earlier this year, I had the privilege of presenting at the Consortium for Therapeutic Communities (TCTC) Virtual Conference. It was an honour to be invited to share my experiences alongside so many inspiring speakers and to represent not only my work as a Peer Advocate on the Include to Improve programme at Sport for Confidence, but also the incredible community that is Mobilates.
The presentation was titled Containment Without Walls: Holding Care, Trust and Connection in Online Working, Movement and Wellbeing Spaces and explored the unique opportunities and responsibilities of facilitating online spaces that support people living with long-term health conditions, disabilities and mental health conditions.
This was the abstract submitted to the conference:

Why Mobilates was at the heart of this presentation
Although I spoke about my work as a Peer Advocate with Include to Improve, the heart of this presentation came from Mobilates.
It was through Mobilates that I first experienced what an online wellbeing space could truly become. I joined as a member looking for support with my own health, never imagining that I would one day be teaching classes, writing content for the website, or presenting at a national conference about the very community that helped rebuild my life.
The examples I shared throughout the presentation came from the relationships, experiences and learning that have grown within Mobilates. I reflected on how we welcome people into our sessions, the trust that develops over time, the different ways members communicate and support one another, and the incredible continuity that exists when we finally meet in person after months or years online.
For me, Mobilates demonstrates that online spaces can be far more than exercise classes. They can become places of belonging, understanding, shared experience and hope. They show that movement, peer support and genuine human connection can exist across distance when spaces are held with care, consistency and compassion.
It was a privilege to be able to share that story with professionals from across the therapeutic community sector, and I hope it encouraged others to think differently about what can be achieved through online working.

If you'd like to hear more about these ideas and see the presentation in full, you can watch the conference recording below.
I hope it gives you a little insight into the incredible work we do together as a community, and why I believe the spaces we create through Mobilates are so much more than online exercise classes.
Thank you to Leanne, the Mobilates team, and every member who has been part of this journey. Many of the stories, reflections and examples shared in this presentation were inspired by you.

Mobilates CIC provides inclusive, adapted exercise for people living with long term health conditions, chronic pain, fatigue and disability.
