Rachel

Student Physiotherapist and Content Creator

Rachel

I am a second year mature physiotherapy student with Hypermobility Ehlers Danlos syndrome, arthritis and all the lovely things that come with it! I am also dyslexic and have CPTSD. My first degree is in chemistry, so I am a big science geek.

I joined Mobilates as I needed some form of accessible exercise that I could do in my own time being very busy, hence me loving the recordings not to mention the Mob!  I have always had problems getting back into exercise as in my teens before the treatment of HEDS changed, I was very sporty until my surgeon told me to stop all exercise and I deconditioned!  Mobilates has allowed me to slowly recondition after 15 years of inactivity.

I am a lot stronger than I was, as I used to be an ambulatory wheelchair user.  I haven’t had to use my wheelchair for a number of years now. I also love how accommodating the classes are due to me having a fused shoulder and knees that are end stage arthritis. Not being able to get on the ground and being able to use a chair is brilliant! The Mob (Mobilates members) are fantastic people, it makes a really friendly supportive environment too! I cannot sing the teachers praises enough.

I am volunteering as I have had to pause my physiotherapy degree due to upcoming surgeries this year with big recoveries, also my knowledge of exercise combined with life experience allows me to champion accessibility in exercise.

In my role as a content creator for the Mobilates website I am working on practical exercise tips for different conditions, all of which Mobilates members have experience of. These are conditions that can benefit from exercise in a variety of forms. This is where I find my physiotherapy background helps understand some of the barriers to exercise that different conditions present.
