A cartoon of a fat disabled woman age 65. She is lying on her bed doing very gentle pilates with a pilates ball. She is wearing blue leggings and a purple stripy top. She is resting her legs on a large orange ball and her head on an orange cushion. She is smiling and resting her hands on her tummy.

Before I started Bed Pilates I felt demoralised, failure, and angry because public health messaging kept telling me to exercise but I didn’t have a safe way to re-start with chronic and complex health, joint and pain issues

After a month of trying Bed Pilates I now feel seen, safe, understood. More confident in knowing what my body can and can’t do safely. My mental health improved greatly from being part of such a supportive community of people with life-restricting health conditions. I have hope for the future.

Mobilates has helped me get up and down stairs with less pain; reduced MSK headaches; regain a sense of control and direction in life.

What makes Mobilates different is that classes are:

  • Online so I don’t have to be well enough to go out

  • Online so the social dynamics and sensory stimulation are easier as an Autistic person

  • Run by people who don’t fuss or treat me like a safety risk

  • Full of laughter, compassion and acceptance rather than individuals doing things just for their own benefit (or competing)

  • Varied, functional (we did one focusing on strength for gardening and ways to ease aches and pains from gardening)

  • Always adaptable depending on how our bodies and brains are that day

  • Non-judgemental

  • Constantly affirming and reminding us to ‘go small’ and to rest rather than push - which as a former competitive athlete reminds me to protect me from myself!

Mobilates is saving the NHS money by reducing my meds and appointments for physical and mental health AND my need for specialist autism services.

Mobilates creates a community for people who are isolated by their health conditions. It has strengthened my confidence and self-esteem which makes it easier for me to re-connect with my local community.
